What is the difference in the types of blades?
Cone Spades (30 Degree Tilt Angle) are all purpose spades for all types of soils. Cone spades shear through tough tap roots and works excellent in very sandy soils. The cone spade is the best choice when digging in very loose soils or very hard conditions. The spades come to a point and completely close at the bottom.
Truncated Spades (22 Degree Tilt Angle) are ideal for heavy clay type soils. They produce a beautiful pot-shaped nurserymen’s ball that has a flat bottom and is easier to basket and burlap.
Semi Truncated Spades (25 Degree Tilt Angle) are a hybrid of our cone and truncated spades; they penetrate like a cone spade but produce a pot-shaped rootball similar to the truncated style. Semi-Truncated spades are a good choice when digging in lose soil.
